A Fair Wisconsin?

Yes folks, it's official.  There are people in this state who feel that marriage has not changed much since the Bible's Genesis account of the establishment of marriage. Last week's vote reflected something just as big.  No longer is the stateI have lived in all of my life politically progressive.  It seems to be truly a state of social conservatism.  I am let down and a little surprised.

It voted based on the fear that same sex couples are a threat to the institution of marriage and that a ban will preserve it.  It voted discrimination into our state constitution.  It voted for the first time in Wisconsin that the Constitution will be used to take away a person's rights. It has decided to deny civil rights to a minority group that is already not allowed to marry or engage in a civil union.  They will not be allowed the same parenting rights, benefits, joint health insurance or right to any state or federal law that protects married couples. 

Here's the thing.  The institution of marriage is sadly not sacred anymore.  And that's between us heterosexuals.  A lot has changed since Jesus reaffirmed in Matthew his opinions on marriage.  In 2006, A.D. you have a segment of the population who desperately want to be married, possibly be a family and we, as a state, voted to discriminate against them.  So these people will be together, hopefully for the rest of their lives despite the vote.  Without paper, ceremony or hoopla.  Because they want to be.  Not because a license, judge or religious official said they could.  People together because they want to be united.  They will go on not being covered by their partner's insurance, have their parental rights questioned and have no legal ground to fall back on if necessary. Because they want to be together at all costs.

It is called free will.  What a concept!  People making a commitment in spite of tremendous odds, social pressure or acceptance. Even though the Bible which was written thousands of years ago says it is not okay.  Long before marriage as it is today existed.  Maybe some of us God- fearing heterosexualsshould look into it...
